I consider myself to be a very lucky woman…I get to travel all around Bali seeing new places to stay, visiting beautiful old temples on tours, and I ‘have’ to try out new restaurants or bars – all in the name of research of course! Every now and then I find a place that I just keep going back to, it ticks all the boxes, has a great menu morning, noon or night, and offers something just that little bit different. Soul in a Bowl is that for me. If you have been to Sanur of late, you would have seen the funky car out the front… If you’ve read my blogs before, you’ll know I’m a foodie. It’s one of the reasons I came to Bali in the first place. Soul in a Bowl does not disappoint. Every plate and bowl certainly has soul, depth and a creativity you don’t find on every menu. Soul food perhaps? My current fave dish, because it changes every time I go in, is the huge and delicious breakfast with fresh asparagus and the best corn fritters in town.Breakfast I’m also a huge fan of the freshly made apple, celery and ginger juice. It’s actually really sweet from the apples and really healthy. Which is great news because my other favourite drinks are the Sanur Soul and Soul Mule cocktails- so having a healthy juice balances it all out. Right?
If you are with a group of friends you can’t go past the tapas menu, corn fritters and feta, soft shell crab, and burger sliders being a regular order. For mains, the seafood bowl is fresh and full of flavour. A friend recently had the lamb shanks and several tables nearby had food envy until they ordered their own.
Soul in a Bowl stands out with it’s well thought out creative fusion menu, and while this might sound odd, the menu suits the decor which is equally as colourful and creative. Comfortable bench seating and sofas, funky tiles, glass light fittings and eclectic artwork create that feeling of being in a Melbourne lane-way restaurant or bar – but with awesome air con to escape to when you’ve had enough of shopping in the sunshine.
And the cool styling doesn’t stop downstairs with the upstairs lounge area creating a space perfect for late night drinks and acoustic music…which is exactly what happens every Saturday. There is a new line up every week, ranging from smooth jazzy blues bands to talented musicians with just the mike and a guitar. I’ve been going every week since the new music line up started and no two Saturday nights have been the same, which is why people keep coming back to see who Soul in a Bowl finds next to play.
Whether you take the advice on the wall downstairs, and enjoy a cup of coffee happiness, or head upstairs to the relaxed library style bar and lounge area, Soul in a Bowl offers a new experience in Sanur and you’re sure to find your little piece of soul food, soul music and soul time in this funky and friendly restaurant and bar.
